Question: if you were a 35-year-old attending, would you go out with a 22-year-old researcher? oh, what a grossly inappropriate pickle...
Me: Granted that she was single, beautiful, mature, intelligent, and isn't after my money--I would.
Him: I laughed at the irony of the initial comment where the guy can be after a girl for beauty but the girl can't be after the guy for money.
Me: Well duh, who wants to date someone hideous in general and acts like the b*tch from Hell, for that matter? Lol. :) As superficial as that sounds, but I mean, c'mon. We gotta be honest with ourselves. What I meant by that comment is 1), beauty is just a quality that everyone naturally seeks--meaning one is instinctually drawn to someone whom they deem physically attractive. Money, is a different factor altogether; it isn't something everyone naturally seeks subconsciously, unlike beauty. That's why I listed intelligence and maturity along with it. (Those are general sought-after traits, to most I know anyway, though, yes, they are also as subjective as beauty, as Miss Pixie implied.) I can date a man who doesn't make much money, but I honestly can't say that I'll date a man whom I think is hideous, meaning he isn't 'beautiful' in my eyes... 2), beautiful in this context also pertains to depth of character. Why shouldn't I go after someone whose character I find to be astounding?
Him: 1.) There's no need to defend yourself; it's OK to admit the double standard determination of what is shallow and what isn't. 2.) I like your lexicography argument for 'beauty' but that there's already a known term for this context pertaining to the depth of a person's charcter -- it's called personality.
Oh but I agree with the double standard too.
Me: Don't get me wrong. A man can be after a woman's money just as well, and a woman can be just as shallow towards a man as a man would towards a woman. I am completely aware of that. I disagree with your statement regarding personality. Personality pertains to a person's traits, character and mindset; it does not necessarily pertain to the depth per se, of one's character. I hear people say all the time that so-and-so has personality. What does that really mean? That there is a special quality to them that makes them who they are? That they stand out well above the rest? All that means to me is that they embody certain traits that makes them who they are. It does not necessarily tell me how deep they are. In short, I disagree because I feel that you are equating the term 'personality' to 'depth of character.' And I don't necessarily believe that just because one has personality, they also have character depth. I can understand how the two terms could be related, but there would have to be some kind of character transformation in order for them to be linked within that context.
Basically, what I was attempting to express in that last statement, in my previous comment, was that depth of character is a beautiful aspect of one's personality. I used the word 'beautiful' to describe that particular trait.
I'm completely not trying to provoke anything at all. I just want to express myself fully. That's all. I promise! :)
